Merry Christmas!

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish all simplewebhosting.co.uk and simpledomainnames.co.uk customers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We hope that, like us, you’ve had a great 2009 and are looking forward to a prosperous 2010.

There’s lots of exciting new things happening in the coming 12 months including the much-anticipated release of our spam filtering solution so make sure you follow us.

Our offices (including our telephone support) will be closing at 4pm today (Friday 17th December, 2009) and re-opening on Monday 4th January, 2010). You can still get e-mail and ticket support over the holiday period and live chat/remote support will be available most days.

VAT rate increase

Following the recent Pre Budget Report issued by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the rate of VAT for standard rated supplies will return to 17.5% on 1st January, 2010

All standard rated invoices issued on or after 1st January, 2010 will apply VAT at the rate of 17.5%. The tax point date for the VAT invoice is the date on which the invoice is issued. This rule applies to the majority of our customers.

Important news about .cn domain registrations

Over the weekend, CNNIC (the Chinese Internet Network Information Center which controls the .cn domain) made an announcement that it is implementing a new policy beginning yesterday, 14th December, 2009, that affects all new .cn registrations.

Under the new policy, individuals are effectively barred from registering .cn domain names as CNNIC now requires a paper application which includes a business seal, company business license (photocopy), and registrant ID (photocopy).

At this time, we are working with Neustar, our registration provider for .cn domains, to determine the exact details of the new policy. It is not yet known what impact this new policy will have on .cn registrations.

For the time being, we continue to process registrations as usual.

Website Builder Upgrade Coming Soon!

On 17th December, 2009 we will be introducing a number of improvements to our popular website builder tool. These include:

  • New banner support on the top and bottom of pages for all template designs added since the last upgrade;
  • Faster WYSIWYG editor with more fonts and font sizes;
  • Added direct pasting into the WYSIWYG editor;
  • Added support for embedding YouTube clips;
  • Added support for Google Chrome and Safari 3+ browsers, as well as IE 6+ and Firefox 2.0+ browsers;
  • Improved support for tables;
  • Better HTML editor.

You’ll be pleased to know that there’s no action required on your part. These improvements will be made directly to the website builder on 17th December, 2009.

simplewebhosting.co.uk uptime for November 2009

Uptime is critical to any website; afterall you don’t see high street stores closing for 10 minutes during the day so why should your website go offline for downtime?

We’re pleased to announce that, for November 2009, simplewebhosting.co.uk achieved a whopping 99.98% average uptime across our servers with most machines hitting 99.99% or 100% and our worst machine still managing 99.97%.

We’re pretty happy with this month’s web hosting uptime but are striving for straight 100%’s across the board in December!
