New .cn Registrations Suspended Indefinitely

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

We regret to inform you that CNNIC (the organisation responsible for .cn domains) has announced an indefinite suspension all .cn registrations from overseas Registrars, including our registration provider Neustar.

As a result of this action by CNNIC, we have no choice but to suspend new .cn registrations

Please note that renewals and transfers will continue to be supported.

CNNIC says the suspension will allow them to implement a better methodology to verify registrant information from overseas registrations. You will remember that in mid-December, CNNIC put into place new requirements for supporting documentation required to be submitted with new registrations.

There is no timetable for the resumption of new registrations. We’ll keep you posted as new information becomes available.

Important news about .cn domain registrations

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Over the weekend, CNNIC (the Chinese Internet Network Information Center which controls the .cn domain) made an announcement that it is implementing a new policy beginning yesterday, 14th December, 2009, that affects all new .cn registrations.

Under the new policy, individuals are effectively barred from registering .cn domain names as CNNIC now requires a paper application which includes a business seal, company business license (photocopy), and registrant ID (photocopy).

More information:

At this time, we are working with Neustar, our registration provider for .cn domains, to determine the exact details of the new policy. It is not yet known what impact this new policy will have on .cn registrations.

For the time being, we continue to process registrations as usual.

We will update our blog with further information as we receive it.

Beware domain name renewal scams!

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Domain Renewal GroupThere’s nothing new about domain name renewal scams and you might say they’re not even scams at all – but one thing they all have in common is they’re unsolicited, will cost you more money and can cause you a real nuisance.

Customers who don’t choose our domain privacy option have their personal data made available to everyone simply by doing a ‘WHOIS’ lookup. This information provides the (legally required) ownership of the domain name including name, address, telephone number and e-mail address. You can view a sample WHOIS lookup for simplewebhosting.co.uk here and another for simpledomainnames.com here.

‘Enterprising’ companies with official-sounding names such as the Domain Registry of America or Domain Renewal Group then write to you suggesting that you should pay them to renew your domain name with them. You MUST NOT do so!

1) The example shown from Domain Renewal Group charges £20 for a .com domain – if you renew with simplewebhosting.co.uk or simpledomainnames.co.uk, we charge you just £9.99!

2) By renewing your domain name with one of these companies, you are transferring your domain name away from our control and to a company in the USA. These companies seldomly have telephone support and are typically difficult to get hold of.

So if you get an official-looking letter from one of these companies, you are quite safe to shred it. If you’re not 100% sure and want to run it past us, get in touch.
