Beware domain name renewal scams!

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Domain Renewal GroupThere’s nothing new about domain name renewal scams and you might say they’re not even scams at all – but one thing they all have in common is they’re unsolicited, will cost you more money and can cause you a real nuisance.

Customers who don’t choose our domain privacy option have their personal data made available to everyone simply by doing a ‘WHOIS’ lookup. This information provides the (legally required) ownership of the domain name including name, address, telephone number and e-mail address. You can view a sample WHOIS lookup for simplewebhosting.co.uk here and another for simpledomainnames.com here.

‘Enterprising’ companies with official-sounding names such as the Domain Registry of America or Domain Renewal Group then write to you suggesting that you should pay them to renew your domain name with them. You MUST NOT do so!

1) The example shown from Domain Renewal Group charges £20 for a .com domain – if you renew with simplewebhosting.co.uk or simpledomainnames.co.uk, we charge you just £9.99!

2) By renewing your domain name with one of these companies, you are transferring your domain name away from our control and to a company in the USA. These companies seldomly have telephone support and are typically difficult to get hold of.

So if you get an official-looking letter from one of these companies, you are quite safe to shred it. If you’re not 100% sure and want to run it past us, get in touch.

SCAM warning for simplewebhosting.co.uk and simpledomainnmes.co.uk customers

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

It has been brought to our attention that a scam is circulating around the Internet asking people to click a link in order to upgrade the security on the mailing service. THIS IS COMPLETELY BOGUS.

The e-mail may look something like this:

Dear user of the simpledomainnames.co.uk mailing service!

We are informing you that because of the security upgrade of the mailing service your mailbox (xxx@simpledomainnames.co.uk) settings were changed. In order to apply the new set of settings click on the following propecia finasteride link:

Best regards, simpledomainnames.co.uk Technical Support.

Although the link looks like it goes to simpledomainnames.co.uk, if you click it you are actually taken to another website where you will be asked for sensitive information.

We urge customers to NOT click any links in this e-mail and if you receive it to delete it immediately.

If you have already been caught out, you should change your passwords urgently.

Having e-mail problems when away from home/the office?

Monday, July 27th, 2009

If you take your laptop or smartphone away from your home or office you may suddenly find that you’re unable to send e-mail.

This is a very common issue in hotels, public Internet areas and in certain office buildings where firewalls restrict users sending e-mail through the standard port 25 in an effort to help prevent spam.

But don’t worry! simplewebhosting.co.uk runs duplicate SMTP ports on all our servers. So if you’re having problems sending e-mail from somewhere you’ve not sent e-mail from before, try switching your outgoing mail server to use port 26 instead. You will typically find this setting in the ‘advanced’ tab of your mail program.

Of course, if you still have problems then get in touch.
