Is YOUR password secure?

Sunday, December 8th, 2013

Passwords are an everyday part of our lives and are essential in protecting our most sensitive data; including our web data. But how secure is your password? At simplewebhosting.co.uk we regularly see examples of poor password choice and find it’s a constant battle to educate users in the importance of choosing a strong password.

Mark Burnett (xato.net) has used lists of leaked passwords to compile a master list of the 10,000 worst passwords; an astonishing 91% of all passwords used appear in the top 1000. Click on the wordcloud above – if you can see your password then you should change it now!

Here are some startling facts gleaned from Mark’s data:

  • 4.7% of users have the password password;
  • 8.5% have the passwords password or 123456;
  • 9.8% have the passwords password, 123456 or 12345678;
  • 14% have a password from the top 10 passwords
  • 40% have a password from the top 100 passwords
  • 79% have a password from the top 500 passwords
  • 91% have a password from the top 1000 passwords

So is it time to change your password? The answer is almost certainly yes!

We’ve recently introduced stronger password strength requirements meaning that no longer will you be able to pick cPanel or mailbox passwords that are insecure. We know that this will be a nuisance to some customers but we believe it to be an essential nuisance.

Improved Server Backup Policy

Friday, December 6th, 2013

At simplewebhosting.co.uk we’ve always worked hard to take care of your data. Every night complete backups are taken of your hosting account and these are stored on a separate hard drive in the server along with a weekly and a monthly backup meaning we always have three different backups available should anything go wrong.

Whilst this has worked well over the years we no longer feel it offers enough protection and we are pleased to announce that we’ve moved to a continuous data protection (CDP) service. CDP is a nearly continuous data protection system capable of providing multiple recovery points per day. This has numerous benefits over the old operation:

  • At any point in time the CDP will hold ten twelve-hourly backups, two weekly backups and two monthly backups making it simple to roll-back your website.
  • You’ll be able to restore files and data yourself from within your cPanel. Just look for the ‘R1Soft Restore Backups’ icon.
  • In the event of a catastrophic disk failure (of which we’ve experienced a handful over the years) we’ll be able to restore a whole server’s data to a new drive in around a couple of hours. Currently this process can take up to a day!
  • The CDP uses fewer system resources than the old backup system resulting in much less strain on your server.

The best thing about all of this is it won’t cost you a penny more. We believe strongly that although we provide budget hosting we don’t provide a budget service.

Urgent server maintenance – server15

Wednesday, November 6th, 2013

Customers hosting on server15.simplewebserver.co.uk may be aware of two short outages overnight. The first was around 30 minutes – this was due to the server being rebooted and needing to do a full disk check. The second, a couple of hours later was for just a few minutes.

On investigation this morning it has become apparent that these outages were caused by a failing disk drive which will need replacing. Fortunately the disk drive in question is the one used for backups which should make the process fairly easy.

Between 9pm and 10pm this evening (Wednesday, 6th November) we’ll be taking the server offline in order to replace the failing drive. There will be around a 30 minute window of service disturbance during this time as we power down the server, remove the drive and check everything is as it should be in the BIOS.

We apologise for the short notice but I’m sure you’ll appreciate the urgency required here.
